Column of lion cubs bronze
This monumental bronze was made from an original sandstone created for the inaugural exhibition of 2006 at the Espace Séraphine Louis in Clermont de l'Oise. It was then presented at the Printemps de la sculpture in Chantilly, an exhibition in the city. A recent order from a collector allowed me to create a bronze copy recently presented at the Contemporary Art Fair Lille ARTUP 2023.
The original stoneware was mounted with a stick giving the whole a raw look. At the time, I had particularly worked on the play of intersecting gazes giving life to the whole and therefore forming a striking contrast.
When I was a child, the roar of the lions at the Vincennes zoo awakened in me the ancestral terrors of man confronted with a hostile nature. I therefore measured with my eyes the width of the moat which separated the big cats from the visitors, also having in mind the image of Epinal reproduced in my history book representing Blandine delivered to the big cats! I was not leading by wide. My gaze has since evolved and this composition could humorously symbolize the shrinking of wildlife territories due to human activity.
These five lions are united, empathetic to each other, waiting for an answer, in a way an inverted human/animal relationship. What about fairness ?
The rich tawny patina produced by Yves Cabasson evokes the savannah and reinforces the wood aspect given by the stick work. This animal statue was made by the HARZE art foundry.
