Giraffe and her doll

During the Jean -Joseph Carriès exhibition at the Petit Palais, I was very touched by a terracotta “L'Infante” representing a little girl clutching her puppet to the point of breaking it, a fitting expression of the innocently destructive side from childhood. The idea of the theme of the little girl and her toy came back to me one evening and I modeled this young, slightly melancholic giraffe. No violence there but a question about what the future holds for him. Her doll reassures her. She uses it as a shield against the destructive instinct of those grown- up children who have not been able to channel it.
