Archaeological Museum of the Val d´Oise Installed for the exhibition "Sculptures en Liberté" in Summer 2020 on the patio of the Museum which was designed by the landscape architects Isabelle Lévêque and Hélène Ruffenac, the recumbent figure now rests there permanently. A diversion, the blink of an eye, a shift, Sophie Verger appropriates the collections even to her astonishing true/false recumbent figure exhibited on the central patio of the Museum, blurring the lines between myth, archaeological reality and contemporary creation. Museum of Berck The animals remember. It is a very old story, perhaps a myth, perhaps not, when the earth was a garden where they lived in peace, an era of harmony and of games: the childhood of the world. It was a time when the children of men learned to speak the language of the seal, even before the forces of nature incarnated themselves sometimes in the hippopotamus, sometimes in the crocodile. It was still long before the dolphins came to the rescue of the shipwrecked and the she-wolf took care of the abandoned twins, when following the example of the Minoans, the acrobats and bulls danced a ballet in the arena and death was not the outcome. It was before anthropomorphous gods created the eagle for the misfortune of Prometheus, the agent of their perverse cruelty. It was before man caricatured God by reducing him to his image. The animals remember the lost paradise, the Garden of Eden which can only be reached through the path of childhood and which can only be glimpsed with a look unencumbered by the ugliness of the present time. It is here that Sophie Verger guides us, among the beasts of the museum, in a tranquil world where peace and carefree bliss reign…….carefree, it is necessary to brave the laws of gravity as her models often do: where art reigns, with a vigorous trunk nothing is impossible! Like the little girl balanced on the back of the tight-rope walking donkey, it is necessary just not to ask needless questions but to give only the essential consideration and rightful attention which is its due. To reach high, one must sometimes rely on others, and one should not be perplexed at the inclusion of forms which appear to have little relevance in a museum largely devoted to maritime life – it is not he intention for the visitor to be left all at sea. It is together that the elephants attempt their adventure, even if it means capsizing the boat, to the great displeasure of this drunken Noah who only knew how to count to two! And so the ship goes! In times of shipwreck, unless it is to embark for Cythera, it is invaluable to have a rhinoceros on board. In the museum, the animals play and, for some, pose. Two giraffes out on a spree remind the Count Lepic of the time when he was slumming it at the Opera with his friend Degas while a comely siren learned the joys of the outdoors together with Pierre Carrier-Belleuse’s model. A family of seals installed near the sailors are waiting too and for good reason, the return of the fishing! The staging of Sophie’s tender and poetic bestiary in the Berck Museum’s collection of painting and archeology is not just a pleasant interlude or a humorous parenthesis in the world of beasts. She brings back images buried in our childhood memories and, beyond looking at what brings us so close to animals, she invites us to restore that of which our social learning has deprived us. Pompon Museum Always very close to nature, Sophie Verger has the uncanny ability to capture an animals every familiar attitude. As she lets her imagination run unffettered, she reveals a uniquely personal style, tender, whimsical and most elegant. Her animals are so alive, with lots of motion : they dance, they play games, they tussle, they even climb on top of one another ; somehow keeping their balance to create columns of dizzying heights. Then there are also the stranger creatures, halh human, half animal, that fill you with wonder and amazement… We are grateful to Sophie Verger for inviting us into her fanciful, imaginary, sometimes strange, even mysterious, but always graceful and soothing world, in which nature, humans and animals all appear to live in perfect hamony.
